Ties and Fragrant Lies
4 June to 25 June 2013, One East Asia, Singapore
Ties and Fragrant Lies marks the first art exhibition featuring all recent paintings by eight young Thai artists under 30’s whose paintings contemplate and reveal the vagaries and contradictions of urban life in the city. The title of exhibition is derived from a play of words with Thai fragrant rice, Thailand’s most well-known export. The altered form signals a rupture of the gentle and alluring façade of a country so often promoted as the Land of Smiles. While the works may take on a precautionary tone against worldly attachment and misguided perception, they also suggest in converse a pathway towards meaningful living and fulfilment.
This exhibition was co-curated by Woho Weng, who graduated from the Asian Art Histories Programme in 2012.
